Top 10 Favorite (very) Minor Characters

Question: Top 10 Favorite (very) Minor Characters?

Answer:  Wow!  This was an extremely difficult topic this week.  We really had to think on this one, which took us completely out of our comfort zone... That being said, we took some liberties and many of our choices appear in 1 or 2 chapters instead of 1 or 2 pages.  Hopefully our readers aren’t offended.....

  1. Arthur “Boo” Radley (To Kill a Mockingbird) – While Boo was a constant topic throughout, he only make a few appearances in person.  It would have been amazing to find out what he was doing and thinking behind the scenes.
  2. Marvin (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) – The greatest robot dealing with depression of all time!  We love characters with issues.
  3. Sir Cadogan (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) – One of the bravest (and clueless) characters in the entire series.  He brought a smile to our faces with every appearance.
  4. The Old Man (James and the Giant Peach) – Such an intriguing character.  We’d love to get our hands on a bag of his crocodile tongues.
  5. Ben Gunn (Treasure Island) – Another character that can be questioned regarding his minor status, but anyone marooned on an island for 3 years must have some pretty interesting stories to tell.
  6. Aunt Pittypat (Gone with the Wind) – This character was so much fun.  And while she didn’t have too many redeeming qualities, it would have been fun to tell her some kind of dramatic gossip just to watch her nearly faint and ask for the smelling salts.
  7. Mr. Fezziwig (A Christmas Carol) – One of the greatest bosses in all of literature.  Plus, he had some crazy dancing skills.
  8. Alba (The Time Traveler’s Wife) – The genetic disorder in this book is soooo fascinating.  We’d love to know more about Alba’s adventures.
  9. Miss Honey (Matilda) – She’s one of literatures most beloved teachers and the standard for which we judge those in the real world.
  10. Emmeline, Adeline, and the ghost of Angelfield (The Thirteenth Tale) – Okay, so maybe these characters aren’t exactly obscure, but there’s so much more we want to learn about them.

Have a great week and head on over to The Broke and the Bookish to join the fun!

  1. Great list. I love Marvin too and Mr Fezziwig. I have to confess that I read Treasure Island after years of watching the muppet version. I still think of Ben Gunn as Benjamina.

  2. Oh, Ben Gunn, I hadn't even thought of him. What a fabulous choice!
Marvin the paranoid android and Sir Cadogan for the win!
What a great list. You made me smile with it.

  3. I loved Treasure Island, and Ben Gunn was a great choice. And Sir Cadogan -how charming! I didn't come up with a list this week, but if I did I would have never thought of him. I love James and the Giant Peach when I was younger, but I can't even remember the story now. Will have to re-read it!

Don't know if you've ever heard of the book Finny, but I'm giving away a signed copy on my blog if you're interested.

    Great list!

  4. Great list! I wish I'd though of Sir Cadogan. He's a lot more minor than Lucius, which I chose as my HP character.

Glad to see Marvin on another list, too.

  5. I didn't even think of Alba. Great choice!

  6. You are right--we do want to learn more about them. I've enjoyed your list the most this morning, great characters. Kaye—the road goes ever ever on

  7. AWESOME list! Boo Radley is a great choice, I have a 4 way tie for favorite HP characters-Luna Lovegood, Neville Longbottom and Fred and George Weasley :) I do love Sir Cadogan too!
