A Fine Balance

A Fine Balance
A Fine Balance – Rohinton Mistry
Evan’s ESS = 9 out of 10
Erin’s ESS = 7 out of 10
Content = PG-13 (Adult Concepts, Mild Violence, Mild Language, Extreme Unfairness)

Why:  Who doesn’t need to brush up on their history of India during one of the country’s most tumultuous and controversial  periods.  A few words of caution though: Don’t make the mistake of selecting A Fine Balance as a light read on vacation like one of the Two Bibliomaniacs may or may not have done.  The pristine sand and gentle waves breaking against the shoreline are a stark contrast to the unapologetic look at the poverty and social injustice described in Rohinton Mistry’s novel.
A Fine Balance follows the lives of several diverse characters through a period of India’s history called The Emergency.  The account holds no punches as it looks at the real life impact of the decisions made by the government.  This really is historical fiction at its best.  Just prepare yourself.  It also wouldn’t hurt to have a tissue dispenser nearby.   Or a half pint of Haagen-Dazs.  Or both, but whatever...
